Let’s talk green. The hemp industry has seen some much-deserved press as of late. With new legislature helping increase education, research, and production in the US, it’s been a great year for hemp! Boasting a wide variety of uses for everything from building materials, paper, fabric, skincare, and even fuel, this green beauty provides great hope in helping to move towards a more sustainable future. The hemp plant seems perfectly designed for the task at hand.
- The nature of its growth cycle provides a high yield in a much shorter time. One acre of hemp can produce as much paper or fiber as 4 acres of trees, and with the ability to regrow within a matter of months vs the decades it would take to replace trees this is a giant leap in helping to conserve our forests.
- It is naturally pest resistant, which helps to eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides which can be toxic to both humans and environment.
- Hemp products can be recycled, reused, and are biodegradable.
The environmental benefits are apparent, but why include hemp-based products in your skincare routine? The answer is in the seed. Hemp seed oil, or “hemp oil”, is produced from cold pressing the seeds of the plant, producing this green goodness that is your skin’s best friend.
Here are just a few of the many skin benefits of hemp:
Moderates Oil Production
Using the right oil to help provide moisture may seem counterproductive if your skin is naturally on the oily side, however using an oil-based moisturizer can actually help to regulate your skin’s own oil and prevent overproduction. Hemp seed oil has a comodogenic rating of 0, which means it won’t clog your pores and is a great choice for all skin types, even acne prone.
Antioxidants are naturally occurring chemical compounds that help to fight free radicals. Free radical damage is a natural occurrence with aging, but there are many environmental factors such as pollution, stress, smoking and alcohol that can accelerate this process (think premature aging). The antioxidants found in hemp seed oil help to neutralize free radicals, giving skin natural protection against daily exposure.
Hemp seed oil contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids such as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) which helps reduce skin inflammation while also encouraging new cell production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Helps Treat Acne
Hemp seed oil is naturally anti-bacterial, which makes it a great tool to help treat and prevent acne. The inflammation-reducing omega fatty acids help to lessen the appearance of acne while also being beneficial to skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.
Because of these reasons, hemp seed oil is one of the main ingredients in many Belle & Rose products. We strive to use Kentucky grown, organic hemp seed oil in order to support local while also reducing our environmental impact.
